The Sangkheum Center for Children is a joint project between the Italian NGO Progetto Continenti and the Khmer Angkor Development Organisation (KADO). In the Khmer language, Sangkheum means hope. Since 2001, we have provided hope for over 260 orphaned, abused or neglected children. Currently 48 orphans stay in our Center, while we support another 58 children who still live in their communities and over 160 children in education and training.

What we do
Our education program includes both general
education and vocational training such as
agriculture, English, Khmer culture,
traditional dance and music, handicraft
design, dressmaking, artistic iron welding,
and recreational activities such as painting
and sport.
We also provide scholastic support and
supervision to children between the ages of
4 and 17 years of age. We work with local
partner organizations and village leaders to
identify children most in need and the
selected children live in individual houses
with a stable caregiver to provide the
feeling of a ‘family group'.
When the children reach 16 or 17, the staff
discusses with them what they would like to
do once they leave the Center. From these
discussions, we organise programs to help
them develop specific skill sets which will
provide them with a sustainable future. In
order to do this, we have recently started a
new silk laboratory and an iron workshop.

What you can experience
Take a
tour to learn about the Center, about the issues surrounding Cambodian
children, and our activities in the villages. You can also see students
making a variety of handicraft products in handicraft and practicing
their dancing and instruments.
Visit our Silk Lab, where young disadvantaged women trained in sewing
and dressmaking produce silk products for export and for sale. Buy some
of their products to contribute to their sustainability. Open daily from
7:30am - 5:00pm.
Purchase our T-shirts or handicrafts from the Center to help us to
improve our activities
Check out our Iron Workshop in nearby Puok District, where disadvantaged
young adults create custom-made products for sale. Open Monday-Friday
7:30am - 5:00pm.
If you are in a group tour, ask in advance at your hotel to organise a
traditional Khmer performance in the evening at the Sangkheum Center.
The special atmosphere will be supplemented by a small buffet (bookings
at least 1 week in advance).
For individual tourists, we currently perform traditional Khmer dance at
several Siem reap hotels and guesthouses. Call us for locations, days
and times.
